BACK TO THE FUTURE FOR INDONESIAN STUDENT AND THE VICE-CHANCELLOR

Djoni and Professor Bob CryanAn international student from Indonesia has returned to study at the University 20 years after first studying in Huddersfield, when he was taught by the now Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bob Cryan.

Djoni Ashari originally studied for a BEng in Electrical and Electronics Engineering between 1986 and 1989, with Professor Cryan as his tutor for the Electrical Science module in 1986. In December – 20 years after graduating - he was re-acquainted with Professor Cryan, when he returned to the University to do a Master’s degree in Engineering Control Systems and Instrumentation, as a result of a scholarship from the Directorate General of Higher Education in Indonesia.

Djoni presented Professor Cryan with Indonesian ‘Kemeja Batik’, a ‘natural art’ in Indonesia which has been considered both an art and a craft for centuries. In Java, Indonesia, batik is part of an ancient tradition, and some of the finest batik cloth in the world is still made there.

“Remembering how he reacted when I showed him some old photographs, I felt that he was an old friend from such a long time ago. I have fond memories including when he taught us in 1986 and our group asked him to slow down with his speech because he spoke too fast and we did not understand! For me he was the best ‘guru’.

“Before I met him in December, it was very difficult to imagine that I would meet him in such an informal way but there it was, he is so nice and I am glad to meet him again after all this time.”

Djoni also commented on the huge changes in the University since his first experience of studying here: “It’s my first time back to Huddersfield since 1989 and I was very impressed and amazed at the campus transformation. New hi-tech buildings have now been built and the facilities are amazing. I have also noticed that there is a vast amount of professoriate and a good mix of international students now at Huddersfield.”

Djoni also added that “90% of the campus is unrecognisable to me as it has changed so much. There are now much better facilities and the library is much better with state of the art technology and equipment.”
