CELEBRATING THE HUDDERSFIELD GRADUATES OF 2009
The University of Huddersfield saluted its graduates of 2009 with a second awards ceremony in November.Over 6,000 graduates received their awards in 2009 at the ceremonies both in November and July. Graduates in November were awarded by the University’s Chancellor, Sir Professor Patrick Stewart, on campus.

The University was also pleased to welcome this year’s honorary award recipients, who were presented with their awards at the ceremonies. Among them was Cyprus-born Theo Paphitis (pictured) best known in his capacity as a ‘Dragon’ in the British television programme ‘Dragon’s Den’. He was honoured in recognition of his contribution to the world of business.
Theo became involved with the University last year, when he helped to develop and launch a brand new degree course Enterprise Development BA(Hons) offering students practical advice and support in setting up their own business.
“This degree is absolutely spot on,” said Theo, “a third of all businesses fail in their first year, and they fail because people have to learn as they go along, and they make decisions and hope that they’re not fatal; unfortunately, they often are.
“Decision making is such a vital aspect in business, and this degree teaches students how to make these decisions and what the probable outcomes will be in an environment where their livelihood is not at stake. It’s so important to encourage entrepreneurship in all disciplines, to encourage people to learn as much as possible about business and to strive to be as successful as possible.”
He was conferred an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration by the University.
